It is
2:55 pm on June 6th 2006 at Amsterdam’s Lufthansa airport lounge.
Just about an hour earlier, my daughter,
Yoko bore a healthy boy. And coincidently, I was able to be present
at the time when the baby was born and hear his crying. He had
full hair on his head and looked very healthy.
The reason why I say it was a coincidence was because of the following
reason:
My daughter left for the hospital
early this morning with my wife to give birth. My flight was leaving
at 4 in the afternoon so I called a taxi at 1:20 to go to the
hospital. I arrived at the hospital at 1:35 and found my wife
waiting for me at the entrance. “Her contraction started but probably
the baby will not be born right away. Well, let’s go see her anyways.”
However, I waited around right outside the operation room. I didn’t
want to distract my daughter. I did stop a nurse and explained
that I am a water researcher and would like to have amniotic fluid
as sample. She told me that she’ll ask the nurse in charge. (however,
she forgot about it in the end…I wanted to take a water crystal
photograph of it. )
Soon, my wife came out and said, “you
should leave now, the cab is waiting right? I’ll let Yoko know
that you were here.” “ok, then I guess I’ll go.” So, finally,
I wasn’t able to be there for my children or grandchildren again...
I thought as I walked out the door. Then I realized that I still
had Yoko’s house key in my pocket. “oops, I should give this back”
I thought and returned back to the operation room.
“Can you give this key to my wife?”
I saw the same nurse so I handed it to her. As I was about to
get on the elevator, the operation room opened up again and she
came out saying “wait, the baby is born!!”
“What? Really?” I was thinking as
I walked in the room. There, I heard a strong crying voice of
a baby. Another nurse lead me to the opposite side of the room
and there, I saw a big baby with full black head hair crying aloud.
My wife was full of tears. I felt
something on the brim of my eyes as well seeing the whole scene.
I was enjoying that moment when my daughter cut the thought off
with a steady voice, “dad, you should go now, have a safe trip,
thanks.”
“oh, ok then. I’ll be leaving take
care.” I said and left without lingering. (in reality, I couldn’t
find a comfortable space in that operation room.
Oh, and here’s my boarding announcement.
I’ll write the rest when I get home.
So, here I am, safely back in Japan. It is 4:50 in the evening
of the 7th. I found an e-mail from my wife and she told me that
the baby was born at 1:50 Holland time. So just about 20 hours
earlier. He weight a good weight of 3770 grams.
On the plane back I cerebrated by
myself with a glass of shoju with hot water. I shared the good
news with the flight attendant who brought my second glass. Then,
at the end of the trip, she brought a message from the flight
crews. It says:
Dear Mr. Emoto,
Congratulations on your grandson’s birth.
We suspect that you would have wanted to be with him a little
longer.
We wish you and your family the best.
2006 JUN6 NH210 crew
and there was the name of the captain there.
Apparently, the new baby’s name will
be Sora (meaning: sky). Because the name of his father means mountain,
mother, sea, and the brother, land.
Would this baby be a airplane pilot
when he grows up? No, probably an astronaut.
By the way, the crews of ANA, thank you for a thoughtful gesture.
I will keep that message safely so I can show it to the baby when
he gets older.
